Place the shakes or shingles under cover and off the ground outdoors.
You might be tempted to install your new cedar roofing as soon as you receive it but you need to make sure the wood has enough time to be exposed to your home s climate before you start.
You ll also need to install drip edges along the tops of windows and doorways.
Install the drip edge on the gable ends of the roof after you finish installing your underlayment.
Installing cedar shingles on the wall isn t a difficult process.
Trim any thin edges sticking past the roof.
As with the roof measure the area of each surface making sure to remove square footage for any windows or doors.
It is best to use timber roofing battens and counter battens with a membrane to allow adequate air flow if necessary.
The wood might expand or contract depending on temperature and moisture levels.
Separate shingles approximately 6mm apart.
A good rule of thumb is getting 10 percent more than you need just in case you need more material.
