Wood shingles hail damage. This is not always the case but many times if a roof has significant hail damage up top the gutters will have some impact damage. If you have an asphalt shingle roof look for large amounts of granules in your gutters and missing granules in the shingles across your roof. Hail damage on your roof will cause granules to break loose at the site of each hail stone impact.

Asphalt and or mat that appears shiny. Loss of granules which may expose the roof felt. Hail hits that are black in color. Since the ridge is at the top hail hits it at a perpendicular angle instead of on a slant.

Also take note of any cracks divots or bruising you see. Perpendicular hits cause the most damage so you re most likely to spot problems on the ridge. If hail damage is allowing water to pass through your roofing system then this is a performance issue and should be fixed as soon as possible to help prevent serious water damage to your home. If your roof has been damaged by hail it can be difficult to understand whether the damage is only cosmetic or if it could also impact roof performance.

Shingles with a granular texture such as those made from asphalt or composite materials may show granular loss that exposes the underlying felt random dents with no perceptible pattern and soft spots on the surface.
